Costa Rica | Summer 2016
Liliana Vega, Garden Spot High School
In the summer of 2016, a group of 8 high school students traveled to Costa Rica for eight days. The students traveled around the country and were able to experience its natural riches. They visited the Poas Volcano, and the Hot Springs in Arenal. They also visited an elementary school, and talked to students in the 4th grade. The children were quick to ask us to play soccer and other games with them. As a token of appreciation, our students donated books to the school.
Moreover, students explored the cloud forests of Monte Verde by hiking and enjoying a zip-line course that ran through the tops of the rainforest trees. Finally, the students experienced the hot beaches in San Antonio where they saw monkeys, sloths, and other animals in their habitat. Some of the cultural experiences they had included: cooking with a Costa Rican family, learning typical dances and creating a craft at an Oxcart factory. With the help of the scholarship money, we were able to cover some of the expenses of the trip for each student. This experience was not merely a trip to another country, but rather, a life changing event. Many of the students had never left the country or seen how others live outside of the United States. It broadened their knowledge and enhanced their global perspective while awakening in them a passion for traveling and appreciating new cultures.
